Wow... What a Week..

I have typed the first sentence to this post at least ten times and deleted it.. I haven't been able to sit down and write this week because I can't organize the thoughts in my head.. So many conversations this week about God and spirituality.. There are so many "untouchables" that I feel need to be "touched" but I can't figure out how to begin.. It would be really easy to sit in my own little world with my loving husband and my healthy children when my life isn't being challenged and feel like I've got God figured out, if I could only keep my family and my friends from being touched by pain, I could keep up that charade.. It's easy to do when everything is bright and sunny and we appear as God's "chosen ones".. But then, there is the friend who's child is sick and the medical bills are piling up, and the friend that lost his job, the friend that wants a baby, the friend that is in constant pain with no identifiable reason, the friend that is staying in an adulterous relationship for the sake of her children, the friend that just could not, and oh God forbid I say it, the friend that is gay and didn't ask to be (btw, I don't think anyone does). All of these people are real in my life and all of these people are some of the best people I know and all of these people, I have had real conversations with recently and as my world view changes and I begin to realize that God lies in other places than just a conservative little church in the Bible belt, it's difficult to hold onto some of the beliefs that I've had in the past when these real people exist and I love them.. TREMENDOUSLY...

The point of this post is not to convince you whether someone is born homosexual, or they ate something that made them homosexual or if their mother dressed them in the wrong clothes when they were a child; whatever your conception of homosexuality might be.. We can have those conversations all day long.. It's a great distraction from what we should really be discussing.. It's a huge mis-judgement on my part.. but, I have almost started thinking of the word "homosexual" and "atheist" as interchangeable. Don't get me wrong.. I know there are athiests that aren't homosexual and that there are homosexual's that believe in God.. But I do believe that we are often displaying a version of God that is simply unbelievable to those that don't fit into our little idea of what the package of Christianity should look like and leaving those people that don't fit into our packaged ideal no other path to take. By the way... Do you know how easily you and I could fall outside those ideals? Oh yeah, you're right... Your child could never be gay, you're too holy...

I like to write little sweet posts that make you want to go hug your children.. But, I'm afraid that this one can't be wrapped up and tied with a pretty little bow.. I would love to have lots of healthy conversation on this subject. But here is the thing... This is my blog... I have access to this little feature called comment moderation... I think we've done enough damage to Christianity with trying to do God's job of judging the world.. And I can assure you that a comment that would hurt these people in my life that I love so much will not be posted here.. With that said:

Still left to be discussed and even harder to tie with a pretty little bow. From a dear friend, a question I'm still mulling over, "we been told that God is not vengeful. What have you seen to support this?".. Wow!

Infant and Children's Tylenol Recall

Tylenol has recalled some lots of Tylenol infant and children liquid medicine for infant and children because they may be contaminated with Burkholderia cepacia (B. cepacia) bacteria which has been known to cause pneumonia in those with weaker immune systems!

Please check you medicine cabinet right away for the following and discontinue use. Call the number below and you should be directed what to do to receive a new bottle.

Children Taken into Protective Custody over Bathtime Photos

My mom called me the other day a little worried because of this news cast she had seen where parents had there children taken and put into protective custody because of some pictures taken during bath-time. Bath-time has always been a fun time for our children and I have at times posted pictures that have been taken during bath time after a little creative editing to protect their privacy. I did see that some of the pictures did "show the children's genitalia". We have been very purposeful in making sure that this does not happen with our children when we are posting them somewhere such as this. But this was in developing. I am interested in your opinion. Was this taken too far? What age do you think is too old for bath-time pictures and where do you think the line is?

I Love My Little Ta Ta's!

Well hello there. I thought that title might catch your eye ;). Glad that I've got your attention. I need your help.. Just like a woman to use her ta ta's to lure you into helping huh?

Do you remember our awesome church secretary that I told you about here?

Well, if you don't, she's one of those rare people that actually look like Jesus. You can talk to her and she can somehow inspire you to change things about yourself that needs to change all the while she is building you up and never saying a critical word. She is such a blessing to us all and I know she has absolutely no idea. Which is probably why she is able to be such a blessing.

Anyway, back to the ta tas. Pam is a breast cancer survivor and I have gotten the opportunity to walk in the Miracle Walk our city hosts with her to raise money for the cause for women in our community. And, I have also already been challenged by a few of my friends to wear one of the Ta Ta t-shirts while I walk.. So here is the deal... I think it's worth rocking the boat for this cause. You know, I'm a preacher's wife and referring to personal body parts as ta ta's can be quite scandalous. So I'm setting the goal high at 500 dollars.. If I raise 500 dollars then I will let you choose which shirt that I wear from the choices below:






Really, five hundred isn't THAT much. If everyone that visits my blog will just donate a dollar or two, or if just fifty of you donate ten dollars.. You get it.. No diffusion of responsibility here.. I'm sure that they will except it if I go over my goal.

Thank you Tina Honeycutt-- Where ever you are...

Sorry, no Tuesday's Tips-- Just don't have much for you here lately. But, if you have a good tip, let me know! I'll gladly post it and give you the credit.. I do have a story though.. It may be lame but it's a story..

This morning I was preparing Emma's snack to send to school. I try to use reusable containers instead of unnecessarily using a disposable zip lock bag. I'm not sure whether my stubbornness about this matter is due to me being cheap or my concern for the environment but regardless, it just seems wasteful. Silly probably, it's not like I can save the world by not using a ziploc bag... Anyway, that is me and that is what I do...

So, I put her vanilla wafers in one of those spill resistant snack containers that has the flexible top where a child can pull out whatever is inside without easily spilling it. I immediately wondered if this type of juvenile container might infringe on the maturity of a first grader. So, I asked her if it was okay. I will commend my daughter for her positive attitude. She did say that it would be okay but she had a hesitant look on her face. I don't know if it was her trying to be agreeable or trying to avoid one of my common speeches that would no doubt go something like, "there are children in the world that won't have a snack today. In fact, there are children in the world that will have no food to eat today. In fact, there are some children that won't eat all week. THERE ARE CHILDREN THAT WOULD GIVE ANYTHING TO EAT THESE VANILLA WAFERS OFF THE GROUND. Yes, I often get carried away with my desire to make my children see that they are so very blessed compared to the rest of the world. Regardless of her reasoning, Emma made the decision that enduring whatever humiliation that she might face would be less painful than arguing with her mother.

But, being the perceptive person that I am, at least for today, I questioned her, "does this container make you feel too babyish"? Her response, "that container makes me feel like I'll get made fun of. A plastic bag will do fine". I, not wanting to put my child through any unnecessary ridicule, fumbled through the cabinet for a more sophisticated, Disney princess container and we compromised on something that would allow her to keep her cool status without compromising my environmental conscience. Okay, this really isn't a very detailed post to explain why I avoid using ziplock bags.

The interaction with Emma this morning took me back to fourth grade. There was a girl in my class named Tina Honeycutt. Tina Honeycutt had the most beautiful long dark hair and she always had a different hairstyle. Braids, ponytails, pigtails, buns you name it. Tina's mother was the mastermind of beautiful dos.. There was one particular morning, in admiration of Tina, that I asked my mother to give me pigtails. My mother, being the wonderful mother that she is, happily obliged my wishes. Now granted, my fine, thin ponytails fell quite short of Tina's glorious locks but I proudly bounced into Mrs. Dobbins fourth grade class being sure that I looked better than I ever had only to find Jacob Quick laughing and making fun of me. (There Jacob, now you know the real story of why I wouldn't date you when I was 16. You should NEVER EVER laugh at a girls hair. Not even in fourth grade.) Anyway, as I was standing in the girls bathroom with the mint green walls, crying and taking out my pigtails, Tina Honeycutt was standing beside me telling me that my hair looked beautiful and that I shouldn't worry what Jacob Quick thought because he was a stupid boy anyway...

I remember feeling sorry for Tina because she obviously did not understand the social suicide she was commiting by wearing pigtails in fourth grade. But now, as a mother, I find myself asking, "What did her mother do to her and how can I do it to my girls"? How does a person instill that kind of confidence in their child? I never wore pigtails again.. But Tina Honeycutt went on to wear her hair just like she wanted it. And, I saw her out at a dance club for teens when I was teenager and was shocked to find that she seemed to have plenty of friends and seemed to enjoy life as a teenager just as much as she did as a kid..

May the Tina Honeycutt voice inside you be louder than those stupid boys. Tina Honeycutt, I salute you!
