Children Taken into Protective Custody over Bathtime Photos

My mom called me the other day a little worried because of this news cast she had seen where parents had there children taken and put into protective custody because of some pictures taken during bath-time. Bath-time has always been a fun time for our children and I have at times posted pictures that have been taken during bath time after a little creative editing to protect their privacy. I did see that some of the pictures did "show the children's genitalia". We have been very purposeful in making sure that this does not happen with our children when we are posting them somewhere such as this. But this was in developing. I am interested in your opinion. Was this taken too far? What age do you think is too old for bath-time pictures and where do you think the line is?

I think it went too far. I am in the 95% of parents that have bathtub pictures of my kids, but they are innocent and harmless. I try to take bubble bath pictures because they add more privacy and I have some sweet photos that have nothing to do that is inappropriate.

I have heard of this happening before and it made me afraid to take bath photos of my kids. I think it's crazy that good mothers have to walk on egg shells because of a few bad people.

I could go on such a rant about this... I have pictures of my daughter's first bath at home. I think there's nothing wrong with it at all. You just have to have common sense. Make sure the genitalia are not showing, and don't show a little girl's chest once she starts to develop. They show live births on daytime tv for goodness sake, and no one has thrown a hissy over that. The photo developer and the state need to use their brains and realize the difference between capturing memories and causing child abuse.

I agree that this went too far. I have actually take portraits of babies with bottom up and once with the baby in a basket (very tastefully done) and tried my best not to include any private parts. that was the day of film and all it took was for the baby to move a particular way for something to show. Unless you developed your own film you could not "doctor" up the film. After a simular incident I quit take photos of babies naked they had to at least have on a diaper. If i did it now I would deleat any photos that might be questionable but for my own daughter she is adorable in the tub. As far as age to no longer take those photos depends but probally around 4 or 5 when the child is more aware and you are teaching modesty. sorry for the long comment.

I definitely think this situation was blown out of proportion, but honestly I always wince when I see pictures in family albums of kids (not infants) with their genitals openly displayed. Just rubs me the wrong way. If you catch your kids in a cute moment while they happen to be undressed, that's what Hannah's infamous little black boxes are for! But I think purposely taking pictures of your children undressed is a little bit inappropriate (if we're talking full genitalia here). But I just find it tasteless... not grounds for removing a child.

This is terrible! My heart aches for this family. I guess I have never thought too much about that people look at the pictures you get developed. Now I feel a little uneasy about developing ANY kind of pictures knowing someone is looking though them.... it creeps me out. I think that the employee should have been minding his own business.. so maybe it's partly his job, I don't know. But it sure is an invasion of privacy. Would a child pornographer really develop pictures at Walmart?… I don’t know. Why was HE on the lookout for pictures of naked children?...and to describe them in such a way. It's just sad, I know that child pornography is a horrible issue that we deal with.. and maybe this guy was really trying to help.. but I know that if ever any of us came across something that was questionable we would do the right thing to protect that child.... but I also feel like we have an eye for what is inappropriate. Most of us don’t think twice about pictures like these because it’s a part of childhood….everyone has some sort of bath-time picture in a photo album. Yet another set of lenses we have to look through carefully to protect our families.

Note to self:

Have the pictures of 18-month-old Hank skating in the buff (well, mostly falling in the buff) to be developed somewhere other than Walmart.

I could not believe this when I saw it. Why would they do this too this family. They took those girls out of a happy home to ruin them. I could never imagine this happening. Hopefully, these girls are okay. I don't think there was any harm. CPS should visit my scrapbook of little baby naked girl in the bath. Bath time is cute and fun. I wish as a parent we didn't have to worry about things like this.
Yes, i do believe 5 is a little too old to have a full naked picture of. I know if mom pulled a naked picture of me at five I would not like it. If there were no SIGNS of sexual abuse they should have moved on.

Society has lost it's collective mind. Pretty soon we won't even be able to kiss our children without be accused of child molestation.
Ridiculous!!!

Where will it end?! All the things our parents did with us, and their parents did with them are now taboo? Just cause some person didn't like the naked baby/toddler pics their parents took of them- they don't have to take it out on the rest of us!
